Artichoke’s water requirements

Artichoke’s seasonal water requirements are very high, the total water input varying from 2500 to 4000 m3/Ha. Such value must be interpreted according to the seasonal climate trends (basing on the rainfall estimates and the weather station data) and in line with the company’s production targets. Our philosophy is to convey the right water volume to the plant, thus minimizing the waste through irrigation systems guaranteeing maximum irrigation efficiency and at low pressure.
With drip irrigation it is recommended to:
• shorten the irrigation cycles and increase the number of irrigations up to 11-12;
• do not exceed the volume of 300 mc/ha – for each irrigation.

How to water arichoke plants

The most suitable irrigation system for artichoke plants is drip irrigation. The driplines are installed by each plant row (with a distance between 1.2 – 1.5 mt), generally above ground. The flow-rate of each dripper is between 0.8 and 2.1 liter/hour with 30/40 cm spacing.

This allows to have 8000 ml of dripline. This system is always implemented regardless of the shape of the field (which could be irregular, not perfectly squared) and the position of the water source. This generates the reduction of the necessary manpower and cuts down the energy costs. P1 and Isiplast-tape are the recommended driplines.

Filtration System

The filtration system is an essential element of a drip irrigation system because it avoids the system’s obstruction guaranteeing that each dripper supplies the nominal flow rate as per project, thus ensuring uniformity for the whole block.

Fertigation

Artichoke plant undergoes a remarkable increase in volume over their cycle, except for a short vegetative stasis during the winter period. To support such the crop’s growth pace and to achieve a good production target, fertilization properly combined with irrigation is required.

A lack of nutrients, in fact, can generate a reduction of the crop’s growth and the production of small flower-heads, with divergent bracts and a short and thin floral stalk.
