Cultural Background, origin and dissemination

Asparagus is a perennial herbaceous plant native to western Asia, already known to the Egyptians, who spread its cultivation throughout the Mediterranean basin. It later spread overseas.

The asparagus plant thrives on light, loose, sandy, sub-alkaline soils. It does not tolerate sub-acidic soils and therefore requires appropriate corrections. Asparagus is planted using one- to two-year-old plants or seedlings in phytocells. The latter technique has been gaining ground in recent years because it ensures a higher take-up rate.

The asparagus crop remains in the soil for about ten years, especially if it is properly irrigated, so it cannot be included in the normal crop rotation. The plant also suffers from water stagnation and water stress. Therefore, it needs a constant irrigation frequency (sub-irrigation is the best technique).

During harvesting, it is necessary to keep the soil constantly moist to obtain the maximum productive and qualitative expression of the shoots.

Sub-irrigation can be implemented in the case of asparagus, whether the tubers or the seedlings are used as propagation material. In addition to the well-known advantages of saving water and enhancing fertirrigation practice, it has been noted through various experiences that there is a considerable increase in production results with an earlier first harvest in the second year.

Furthermore, irrigation at the root level provides greater resistance to fusarium and Stemphylium attacks. The drip lines used have 2.1 litre per hour drippers spaced 30 to 40 cm apart. The buried lines, one per row, can be buried either at the time of planting or post-transplantation. The recommended burial depth varies between 8 and 30 cm depending on the cultivation technique used.
